SEO For Beginners: 3 Powerful SEO Tips to Rank #1 on Google
Do you wanna rank number one on Google? Well I hate to say it, it's actually really hard. 10 years ago it used to be really easy but now it's hard. And you know what? Unless you watch this whole video, you're not gonna be able to rank number one on Google. Hi everyone, I'm Neil Patel. And today I'm gonna share with you three ways you can rank number one on Google today. I got started in SEO when I was 16 years old. I created a website called Advice Monkey. It no longer exists. If you search for it, you're not gonna see my website. It was a replication and a shitty replication of Monster.com. And when I created the website, I thought, "Oh cool, this is it. "People are gonna come to my site "and I'm gonna get traffic." But you know what? I popped up the website and no one came to it. From that point I realized there was something called SEO that I had to do. I paid a few marketing firms to help me with search engine optimization so that way I could rank number one on Google for terms like job search. But you know what? I gave them money and I got no results. Eventually as a 16-year-old kid, I lost all my money. You only can make so much money cleaning restrooms and picking up trash. So I had to learn it. But when I first started, it was as simple as putting the keywords on your website and you could rank. I wished it was that easy these days. Number one. Focus on content. See Google has this update called Hummingbird, and with Hummingbird what they decided to do is websites who just have content on everything won't do as well as websites who focus on one single niche and are super thorough. For example let's say you have a website around dating. If you have a website around dating, and your article is let's say talking about Five Ways You Can Land a Date, or Five Ways You Can Land Your Dream Date, if you end up breaking down, hey go to Match.com, sign up, and you'll find a match after you create a profile, you're not gonna do that well. But if you write an article that breaks down how to create a profile on Match.com, the ideal picture, the ideal description, how to be funny, how to even maybe add video, I don't know, I haven't been on these dating sites in ages, but if you go really in-depth, and you breakdown every little thing that they should do, and then after you breakdown Match.com, you then talk about Tinder, you then talk about Bumble, you then talk about eHarmony, all the other platforms, you then even discuss how you should respond to people and engage with them, should you be hitting people up, what's the first thing you should say to them, how should you respond, where should you go for your first date, right, how to carry from your first date and ask them on a second date, but if you're super thorough and your content is so amazing that people are like, "Huh, wow, I read this article. "I don't have any more questions. "And I know what to do next," that's how thorough you need to be. So poke holes in your content, and as many holes as you can, and fill them all up, so then that way people are like, "This is the end all site "that you should end up reading "if you're interested in dating online." Actually what's funny, I wish dating was this easy when I was younger. I couldn't just swipe an app like Tinder and find the next match. I was sitting next to my buddy, Terry, the other day, and he kept swiping on Tinder, and he's like, "Check this out," swipe, instant match, swipe, instant match. 30 plus matches within a few minutes. But back in my days, you would have to go to a bar and meet people and actually talk to them. Alright so now that we got that out of the way, let's go into the second tip if you wanna rank number one on Google. The second tip I have for you is optimize your title tag and your meta description. Have you ever done a Google search, and noticed that every time you do it, there is this link at the top, and then there's this one sentence with a link at the top is called the title tag. And the description below is called the meta description. Now think of it this way, if you search for the phrase online dating, and you don't see the word online dating in neither the title or the description, are you gonna click on the result? Well if you are, there's something wrong, 'cause why would you click on a result that isn't related to what you're looking for? In addition to that, have you ever done a search for a term like online dating? And have you ever noticed that the word isn't in the title or description? That's because Google tracks who's clicking on what listing, and they've learned that when a keyword is in the listing, that same keyword that you're searching for, they know you're way more likely to click through. So in your title tag and your meta description, make sure you include the keyword. But you can't just include the keyword like online dating, right? The easiest way and what I would do and I wish it was this simple, I will just put online dating, online dating, online dating, online dating. If I could put it 20 times so people would know that the article is on online dating, I wish I would get more clicks. But it's not that simple. Yes you have to include the keyword in your title and your description, but it has to be appealing. If it doesn't flow in a sentence, it's not easy to read, and it's not appealing or evoking curiosity, no one is gonna click through. The third thing I have for you is to use Google Search Console. Did you know that Google gives you a tool that teaches you how to rank number one on Google? Yes I know that sounds ridiculous but it is true, and it's called Google Search Console. If you're not already a user of it, sign up. It doesn't cost a dollar. You're missing out if you're not using it. I can't emphasize that enough. So now that you're using Google Search Console, give it a few days 'cause it takes some time to populate data. You'll see a screen that shows Search Analytics and this shows you all the pages on your website that are getting you traffic. But the cool thing about Google Search Console is they also show you which articles are getting impressions. And here's what I mean by impressions, you know when you do a search on Google, you don't always click through on a result, right? If you did, then you would be clicking through on 10 results every time you did a search. That would be insane. What Google shows is how many people are seeing your listing and clicking through, and how many people don't click through. So they show you how many Impressions you're getting, the Clicks, and the Click Thru Rate. And what you'll find is, in general, you're lucky if you're getting around a 5% click thru rate, sometimes 10, 15. But in most cases most of your pages are gonna be getting less than 5% click thru rate. Now the cool part about Google Search Console is they show you all the keywords that you're getting impressions for, and all the ones you're getting clicks for. Now remember the first tip was about content thoroughness, and you want an article that talks about everything under the sun, well you can use Google Search Console to tie in back to the first tip. So kinda number one and three are related in which you wanna take all the keywords you're getting impressions for and start adding them to your copy. Now don't just shove them in and have your content be keyword-rich where someone reads it and all it is is online dating, Tinder, eHarmony, dating online, meeting someone from online dating, right? If someone was reading your article and it sounded just like that, they're gonna bounce off your site because that means your content sucks and it just has too many keywords. It has to flow naturally and be educational. So you wanna take those keywords that you're seeing in Google Search Console, and add them to the article. Now we have an article on Instagram, and it teaches you how to get over 300 targeted Instagram followers per day. The article is around 10,000 words. When I first wrote that article, it wasn't 10,000 words, it was roughly 2,500. I went to Google Search Console, I saw all the people that are searching for terms related to the article, I added them within that article. I made it more thorough and you know what? My traffic more than tripled to that article. Yes it is that simple. And when I made that change, it didn't happen right away, but I noticed the results within 50 days. That's not a long time. So now let's recap on the tips. One, make your content super thorough. Two, make sure you include the keywords within your title tag and meta description, but also when you're doing your title and description, make sure you're evoking curiosity, and you're creating amazing title that everyone wants to read and click through. And number three, use the free tool that Google gives you that'll help you rank number one. That's Google Search Console. Use those three things and you can rank number one, not just in the future, but also right now. Now that you've learned these three tips, I challenge you in which I want you to take these tactics and implement them, and then after you implement them, in the next 45 days I want you to leave a comment with your results. Because if you're not doing well, that means I'm not happy. And I know these tactics work, and that's why I'm challenging you. Because if you implement them, you're gonna see results, and you're gonna be ecstatic, and your life is going to change. And I wanna build a community of like-minded people where we all take action and we help each other grow. So I challenge you to take action and implement these three steps. Now granted I know you may be busy, and you may not be able to do all of them right away, but just pick one. It doesn't have to be time-consuming. Pick one of them, make the change, maybe you can start with the second tactic 'cause that's the easiest one. Implement it and you can start seeing results right away. So make sure you subscribe to this video and this channel, and I'll see you in the next video, and we'll keep helping each other grow.

those rankings on Google so the first thing that we want to convey to you is that we don't want you to lose the forest among the trees there's so much that you can do in terms of SEO but we want to make sure that you get the most important things first and so we want to show you like what we're actually doing in SEO and not try to just impress you with general SEO knowledge so we're gonna be taking your questions since this is a live stream we're gonna be taking your questions periodically throughout but we have a ton of content do we want to make sure that we can get out during this webinar thanks everybody for being here ok Google has published a 200 page PDF where this is for their quality checkers most of the way that Google that Google's algorithm works is really just from algorithmic things things that Google can do just with technology to judge the quality of your page but it knows that that's been so gamed that they have now an army of people that are manually going through and ranking websites and their their PDF their guide of exactly what they do to rank your website has was initially leaked leaked and now is just public information and so it's really really cool that we get to get a live view of what Google cares about in terms of SEO yeah so the first thing we want to talk about is what exactly are those SEO tools and the most important thing that Google cares about is the user experience so first let's talk a little bit about what it is that we've done an SEO to let you know what exactly is possible that's right sorry guys I got a little bit frazzled because of Technology issues but let's dive into this first of all what we don't want is for you to let the SEO gurus scare you into I mean everybody's talking about all these kind of technical things you have to do on your website we have tested so many things and we know what works for example on Camp report calm you know over the last five months traffic has jumped from a hundred thousand to two hundred and fifty thousand page views a month just in the course of five months because of the way that we're approaching SEO dirtbikes planet.com seventy three percent of the articles on there are ranking number one on google okay we've never been hit by a Google algorithm update and our sites actually continue to improve as as Google improves and then the other thing tens of millions of people have visited our websites over the years from Google searches so I know it may be it sounds like we're just kind of bragging a little bit but what we want you to know is that this stuff works and actually has worked for a long time and will only become yeah that's that's so critical that you understand that like you know if we can create a website and get 73 percent of the articles that we read that we write to shoot above the thousands of others of competition to number one 73 percent of them can be number one you got this if you follow this recipe what we've done is we're taking everything that we've learned and we've put this into a 45 minute presentation to hopefully get you to where you need to be all right now let's talk about the most important thing for you to understand the aim of all SEO every thing that we're going to teach everything that Google does all the algorithms all the tricks is about one thing and it is to give the most helpful answer when someone searches your topic so if somebody searches RV depreciation the whole goal of everything in SEO is to just make sure the best page is number one that's right everything else the SEO talks about or that they talk about is just a way that Google uses to measure how helpful your website is or how well your website answers the question or resolves the query that somebody has so we want to go through a little bit of an analogy for you I love Tesla cars they're awesome I don't know anyone yet but they're awesome right well they're not the only car company there's another car company Volkswagen who right now has a terrible terrible reputation in the industry because they saw that you know government regulators were testing emissions government regulators and consumers cared about how green the cars were and so there were basically two ways to get around the problem if you have a company a car company you can either make a car that does really well on the test but is not green at all that's what Volkswagen did that's why they lost hundreds of millions of dollars and thrashed the reputation of the company they cheated on the test they tried to take their car and just make it perform really well on an emissions test but it wasn't green at all it was doing a terrible job and the other option is Tesla now Tesla say what you want about it in terms of being a green car like they just blew away the competition does Tesla even care about emissions tests no they care about being a green car and because of that they pass every emissions test it's a perfect analogy perfect for your decision in SEO you can either be a Volkswagen website you can either find out all of the measurement tools that Google is using to measure the quality and helpfulness of that page and try to beat each one of those tests there are over 200 ranking factors that Google uses or option number two you try to just create an incredibly helpful page and then the tests are gonna come easily but that it can be frustrating to hear because you say yeah but I'm trying to make helpful pages that's right now you're asking how to move from page four to page one when page one is full of these authoritative websites this is actually the stuff that you need to know that's what this webinar is actually about we're gonna teach you how to just make a better page and that 200 page document all of it is really just way different ways of measuring how good is this page and so we've broken it down into a helpful way of presenting right okay so Google does have actually a ton of measurement tools that they use to try to again to measure the things that really matter which is how well does that particular page meet the need of the user they do this through you know user experience through the ranking algorithm they're looking for things like click-through rate pogo-sticking which is a little bit different from bounce it's where somebody comes to you know the first article bounces out it goes and looks at article number two bounces out so they bounce back and forth which tell us again it tells Google that those articles are not giving them what they needed yeah somebody had to click into four or five search results to get the answer that's mad so people always say like oh I have a high bounce rate that's bad and I would say not so fast yeah actually a bounce rate can be good for example if I search something like what's the temperature outside in star Idaho and I go to a page that just clearly tells me the answer I have no reason to go to other pages so I bounced but that's actually fine right yeah that's actually a good thing if I pogo stick tanned I looked at other search search results that's probably bad and and this is data that Google can easily measure among other things like the length of content it's easy for them to measure you she can understand why Google's been using these tools having you catchy and descriptive title having really good formatting having a really good direct answer quality links quality external links to your page having a good reputation and get Authority use of images I mean there's there's a whole list a huge list of many many many things that Google uses to to impact where you should rank the length of the URL the author reputation but all of these things are made to measure just a few specific things that that we can accomplish through very very simple means and that's what we're going to get to yes so Romi Tamra Carr is asking do we do link building or no link building in our in our approach well let's just go to what Google is actually telling us in their guidelines plus other things that we've found like let's look at what their test is and now your question is do you want to be Volkswagen are you gonna try to beat the test or do you want to be Tesla and just create a better page and so you can go look at this 200 page document you just go to income school comm slash 200 if you want to read 200 pages it's there but this webinar is the shortened version of it so the shortened version we've kind of broken it into chunks and the first one is reputation Google cares about the reputation of you as the writer and of your website as a whole that's right so again reputation is something that Google's been able to measure through some other things but again it doesn't totally get to you know what the reputation is so you know quality and quantity of websites linking to the domain so not just having a lot of links to your website but having really good ones is a way that Google measures quality so again it's the measurement right if you want to game the test you can work really really really hard to build links from you know high quality websites that can be very very very tough to do because there's no way to do it except legitimately if you find some you know if you're trading links with other websites if you're buying links it's not legitimate and and it doesn't build your reputation so it doesn't meet that criteria the quantity and quality of websites linking to a particular page is going to help that page rank high rank higher again based on the way Google has been measuring things up until now but there are some other things that they're doing today they're using human quality checkers many many many human quality checkers to measure the or to rate the authorship of the person who wrote the post right so what's their reputation yeah like exactly like if I'm going to a page about a legal topic for example it matters that the person is a lawyer if I'm going to a page reviewing pontoon boats it matters that the writer of the article owns a pontoon boat or sells pontoon boats or does something with pontoon boats the reputation of the author the website and links to the specific page do matter so there are all these different ways that Google is measuring it they'll look at your Yelp reviews if we're talking about a local business and stuff there they're actually digging into that kind of things and if you're in a certain category that Google calls ym y el your money or your life then it really matters that you have a reputation if my left arm is numb and I'm having a heart attack and I google heart attack symptoms it doesn't want to give a chance that it's going to send me to the wrong website so Google has to say who has the right information Google doesn't hasn't isn't gonna go read a bunch of medical textbooks to try to say oh yeah this was right I was accurate this one's inaccurate but instead they say you know what the American Heart Association has like 50 million links to it people clearly like this website and they've written an article about this it's probably gonna be reliable but an important caveat there the American Heart Association didn't go they didn't build their reputation by going out and spamming the internet with backlinks right they didn't go out begging for backlinks they created quality content they created a quality they invest millions of dollars into research exactly their research there their content is top-notch and because of that they've become the authority but it didn't happen overnight and and that is the important note here so for years we've said you know sites about fitness weight loss finance that kind of topics legal topics they are very competitive but that's not the only reason why it's so difficult to rank there it's because if you're a nobody and you have no reputation Google probably isn't going to trust you with a search result now those are the measurements those are the those are the tools Google is using to decide them and if you can't read the text on the screen you're fine you go to income school calm slash 2019 slides and you can download them all this is really just to keep us on track we're telling you yet and on the y myl note and a question did just come in on this and i do want to make sure this is covered again Google is not trying to decide which content is you know more valuable than other content like alternative medications versus you know traditional medications or therapies they're not they're not distinguishing which is better which is more important okay what they're doing is they're trying to help users find the content they're looking for so if somebody Google's alternative you know alternative treatments for heart attacks then yeah a website will get something alternate they can get some you'll get the alternative stuff but if you're looking for what are the symptoms of a heart attack they're gonna go to the guy who has treated 20,000 heart attacks in his career and they're gonna link to his article first because that guy has a reputation and experience and so if you're not a medical professional but you do promote some sort of alternative therapy because this question specifically did just come up that's okay if you actually have any sort of legitimate experience tied to that whether or not there's any credential associated that experience alone can give you the credibility and the reputation that you need and we're going to show you in just a minute how to establish that reputation because exactly you know we're telling your reputation matters but we're not telling you to establish it by spamming the internet with that weeks yeah so somebody's asking here like should I be active on social media to establish established reputation you can find the answer to all of those questions should I do this should I do that but just answering one if there were no Google and you were trying to establish reputation in an industry would you do it then yeah go for like would it be smart to be on social media if somebody has a following of five million people following you on a topic does that go to credibility yes of course it does so here's the here's the kind of nuts and bolts of this backlink profile domain authority authorship all of that is yesterday's SEO that's the Volkswagen approach that's trying to just beat individual tests today it's about your reputation it's just about you getting out there and setting up a reputation so you say but I don't have one you say I want to write about about pontoon boats but I don't even own a pontoon boat you say I want to write about knitting but I'm just getting started I want to write about medicine but I'm just interested I don't have a degree in it that's normal for all of us we've created so many sites on topics that we were new Act so let us show you how we did it and still rank just fine that's right this is our we're printing this income schools five-day super secret reputation builder let me there are a lot of marketers ya can't just give this out the first thing is to just get real if you're making a site about pet snakes go get a pet snake for heaven's sake if you're making a site about pontoon boats rent one for the weekend if you can't afford to buy one you know you can't just totally be an impostor you have to get into it somehow but if you're writing about you know how to are you writing about rock climbing go spend a couple of days in a rock climbing gym that's what you had to get real step number one make it legit take some photos while you're at it so that there's photos of you like real legit photos rock climbing and Ricky's not saying this just out of out of in theory Lego it we're making a website about pet snakes right now and so we're buying a pet snake because when you're writing an article one you know do pet snake smell you just go yep hey you know like it just makes everything so much more real if you will do that if you'll just make some effort to be involved in that thing so that's step number one you can't get across that just try to be real step number two create an about page on your website we are terrible at this yes this has not been something that we have typically had in our recipe and as we reviewed the 200 page document for Google you know we said hey that's that's a pretty big oversight yeah we really need to do that because we've always felt like you know it's not really about us it's about them and the content I can kind of see that too but but Google wants it they want to be able to find out who you are where this is coming from to establish your reputation so just simply make an about page okay we're talking about a five-day way to build your reputation in any industry and we've already done two of them that takes you a very short amount of time that's right and on that about page what sort of stuff to include look if you have a degree in something say that you know if you have any credentials if you've spoken to conferences great if not in most niches you're not gonna need those sorts of things what sort of real experience do you have talk about it if you say you know I've had a background a backyard garden for the last 20 years and I've learned you know all sorts of stuff about what works and what doesn't work there you go that's real life experience and in Google's guidelines they specifically say that real life experience is fine you don't necessarily have to have the degree and the certificate and the credential you know if you're writing about back pain and you can say I've been a back pain sufferer for the last 10 years yeah I've been to tons of doctors tried all kinds of therapies like that does have your reputation even though you don't have a degree and you ask what if what if somebody lies about that stuff you know if somebody lies about that stuff and they put out bad content and a whole bunch of other websites recognize that and see that and write like hey you know what this guy is like cousin village it if okay so this is something specifically that Google said and that is that if you establish yourself as having a certain reputation and independent sources multiple independent sources establish you is not having that reputation they will trust the independent unbiased sources now that doesn't mean that every negative review is going to just hammer you that's that's not the way it works Google tries to give it as fair and balanced as a view as possible but if they're getting a similar negative reputation from multiple independent sources they're gonna trust those over you every time that's folks we're gonna test loads out there yeah you want to game the test sure but there are 200 ranking factors and they're gonna find you out on one of them maybe not today but they will eventually yeah okay next create a resource designed for sharing it's just helpful in terms of reputation that something you've been created that you've created has been acknowledged by someone else in the industry create you know a pin on Pinterest on you know put your article on Reddit make an infographic or an epic post just something that could possibly be shared so that your website isn't just an island then go do some outreach this do not spend copious amounts of time doing this if I were to create a new website and it were not about why my all kind of content I might spend one or two hours just writing one guest post putting it out there just so that somebody can acknowledge you go on a podcast do a YouTube collab just do something with someone in the industry just as acknowledgment it's easy this is a one-day thing don't spend forever doing this and again the guest posting has not thing to do with getting a link has everything to do with just establishing a little bit of a reputation and that's exactly right and and I think you made it a really important point there and that is that there are more ways to to build that reputation and to do collaboration beyond just writing a guest post I know a lot of people have told me they complain all the time they say well nobody will post my article without me paying them which is not a legitimate way to build a reputation it's just not and so what what could you do go sit sit in and be a guest on somebody's podcast there people are more willing to have you be on their podcast than they are to post your article on their website for some reason same thing with YouTube doing a YouTube collaboration you know have a Skype interview a phone call and record that and put it up get them to put it up on their YouTube channel that's not the same thing as as trading links it's different because there's real genuine content being shared back and forth with each other's communities and it does establish reputation as your website gets bigger you know when you're at five hundred thousand a million page views or you're writing about very very fragile kind of topics why my all things like that then go speak at a conference if you're willing to speak for free there's so many conferences you have to take you go write an e-book in two weeks and put it up on Amazon get a certificate from an online course just something to get started so that's it we've just established your reputation like all of this thousands of YouTube videos about backlink profile all this that's yesterday's SEO today's SEO is just establish a reputation and let Google measure it how they measure it it's easy to do I mean we're talking about stuff in five days you could be done and you're you're set for like I don't know maybe a quarter of the of the ranking factors or something to do with your reputation yeah you did it in five days again we've talked about there there literally hundreds of ranking factors that people have figured this seems to matter this seems to matter that Google has said there are so many of them that to try to game each one of those is a huge waste of time this is in three months Google will put out another update and your gaming will be will be gone so so do these few steps and establish a real reputation now if we want to game stuff this is the place where you game stuff this is Google's user experience measurement tools so these are places where you should be gaming things and by gaming I'm just using that as a funny term I'm really just talking about improving it yeah because whenever you improve your user experiences the tool is gonna reflect it so here's how Google actually measures this stuff we talked about pogo-sticking so making sure they get their answer right away in the article the content length you know when I go to Home Depot I'm not very handy I'm building a tree fort for the kids I say hey I want something to like a bolt to go through the tree to it attach it every time the Home Depot's guys like aisle 53 and he starts walking away it's like and when I read so many blog posts that's how I feel it's like they just look just kind of give a short answer in 300 words and just kind of just toss it out there and it's like no I I wanted you to not just give me what I asked but also think of the next couple questions that I'm going to ask and really walk me through this in a helpful way so content length is a way to measure that exactly so again Google is using content lengths to try to measure that but they're doing a lot more again pogo-sticking is a way they measure that the use of images and other multimedia on your site yeah historically you could gain Google by just putting an image on your site you know just putting an image on the on the article we found that was it remember what the website was what's the difference and they just put random like paintings yeah like what's this about net or something like that they should have a random picture of their like is not trying the game Google yep and when we went there we were like what is this it's a bad user experience right so yes you may be the Volkswagen and beat that particular test there is a networker there yeah but it's gonna be a bad user experience and it makes people say what the crap and they post and and you know some of these other measurements kind of kill that Google Scott and wise to that again if people are pogo-sticking if they're not spending an adequate amount of time on the page for the question they're asking that's another one time on page if if they the user experience is bad people will behave like the user experience is bad and it will impact your ranking so you can't game it the way that you used to be able to other things Google is looking for clean formatting and organization of the article if you just ran in huge blocks of text that are hard to read again Google sees that Plus that impacts the user experience and people will behave that way click the row rate if you rank number one that you're looking great for everything but you just have a cruddy title that doesn't interest people that's a poor user experience you don't rank as well things like over monetization you go to the page and it's just stuffed with ads or ads blocking content poor user experience in the 200 page document something that I found really interesting is they consider affiliate to mentions you know affiliate links to be the exact same as having an ad there and I think that's a smart way of doing it actually when I go to these posts that are like 20 tools for 20 hot tub accessories and it's just so obvious that they're just trying to stuff affiliate links at me it's a poor experience whereas instead if the user experience is like hey I own a hot tub about a whole bunch of crap and these are the three accessories that we like really love in our family much better user experience absolutely so again Jim just mention this but the most game Abul ranking factor of all is the user experience and and nobody else seems to care about that they don't seem to be talking about this let's talk about what we can do for the user experience you know you just somebody just asked here about keyword stuffing and obviously we talked about that not being a good thing you know that's a Volkswagen what's the right rate again even thinking about the rate is the Volkswagen approach think about the user experience if I read a paragraph and the sentence in there just does not fit because you're just restating the same keyword over and over again that's a bad user experience there's not a rate it doesn't matter what matters is that you answer the question they came for and that you do it quickly now it's easy for somebody to say yeah but I really want to rank on Google and what we're saying is for us owning a network of websites and having written thousands of articles as soon as you know like five years ago we stopped caring about that and we said you know what I'm just gonna write a post on this it was fine in fact it was better than fine I said are they doing better yeah we're thinking about how do I write this for a machine we're thinking how do I write this for an individual because guess what the machine is trying to guess how the individual is gonna do and now Google is using individuals to rate different and they're not rating your website they're rating specific articles on random websites all over the internet yeah why do you think Google is pouring millions hundreds of millions of dollars into Android Chrome Google Analytics it wants the user data yeah why do you think Bing has such a hard time knocking off Google it doesn't have the user data for the internet people people aren't using Windows edge as much it just doesn't have as much user data and so it's tougher to knock off Google yep so here's some examples of what it might be so let's take Wiis let's say we take a query of travel trailer depreciation I think we rank on number one on Google for this term we do yeah so what would it look like to write a cruddy article answering this a medium and a high quality because we don't want to just go through this webinar keep saying keep reading high quality content or whatever wait say what that looks like well the article that we ranked number one for in fact open up another tab and just Google something like travel trailer depreciation or RV depreciation you'll see us on there our site is camper report com the snitch and I would consider that to be a medium user experience we have some nice images on there kind of fun things it's an adequate length it's probably 1,500 words long and we have some examples on there so I think it's a medium user experience what did it look like to take that article though and push it to the next okay so pushing that to the next level one the article is actually not that long it's fairly short for that type of content I would expect to have pretty thorough in-depth not just explanation but making more examples maybe a little bit more research it didn't have a great – sent an exact answer at the top and that's the next one answering the question quickly and very thoroughly a lot of people think that if you bury the answer in the post that people will stay on your page longer and that's better that was Volkswagen but when you go to the Internet or you know when you type in a search query and you read and number one article comes up and you start reading through it you get through about four paragraphs and you're like they haven't even like there's no indication that the answer is coming anytime soon mm-hmm I bounced I'm gone I pogo stick because then I go look at the second article mm-hmm and if people are behaving that way on your website that's how Google is going to treat your website it will drop in the rankings answer the question quickly and thoroughly right up front if we had answered it like you know RV's tend to depreciate about 15% in year one another ten percent in year two and then the depreciation amount decreases over time after that it's helpful that would have that would have nailed the answer mm-hmm okay a couple comments we got here first of all hold three goes from Brazil and we love Brazil and then we have a Pisa the wall I'm sorry about that is rankbrain here to stay how much waited would you give to the user experience on a scale of 10 when it comes to SEO no question like where links used to be number one there is no question yeah that right now it that and it's only gonna going to I will make a prediction that will make me look like an idiot in five years but I think in five years links are links are not a ranking factor or whether just long my data analyst I think I would not disagree with that one bit and you asked his rank brain here to stake think about it from the perspective of Google what are they trying to do I mean we've kind of answered that question many times but Google is trying to help users find the content they're looking for end of story find the most helpful resource on the internet based upon you know what people are searching for rankbrain helps them do that because when you know somebody goes to a webpage after looking something up and it doesn't give them the experience that they expected they're gone now is Google going to refine that further yes I don't think they're gonna back off of that I think they're gonna double down on it mm-hmm absolutely and as artificial intelligence gets smarter this is the ranking factor that really matters and if you want to see the slide somebody's has to get income school comm slash 2019 slides you can follow along okay 3d talk says his website is three months old and he still hasn't seen any Google traffic stay tuned yeah coming up okay all right so we've talked about now your reputation which is a good chunk of the ranking factors we've also talked about user experience now we didn't get into as much like what specifically to do with with user experience because it's really just about writing a good post right it depends on really what what the post is the depreciation may be having some tables would be a really good user experience exactly and I think formatting is a huge job I just asked about that formatting is is pretty key to user experience and I'm excited about WordPress Gutenberg and four point nine point six right now it's a kind of a beta deal but in WordPress five coming up very soon that's going to be the default way to write there are going to be growing pains but I'm really excited about that because it's gonna make all of us more likely to add the table more likely to add a little drop cap at the top at the start more likely to have a cute little quote there a clickable tweet all those kind of things that just make a post fun to read I think are incredibly incredibly important it's something I want to get better at at just making up my post clean easy to read beautiful fonts nice nice text like all those things like I'm gonna spend a whole day you know once you have a site that has 100,000 page views if I spend a whole day like getting just some clean readable fonts I'm perfectly happy with that I think that was a good use of my time yeah I think so as well okay so we've talked again we focused a lot on user experience that is really key you need to spend a lot of time on that but then there's a few other kind of pass/fail measurements that honestly you should just like knock these out and spend a day and knock them out the first one is site speed having a website that's slightly faster than another website is not really a ranking factor if anything it might be a tie breaker but hardly even that okay what matters is that you're not at about the bottom 20% yes if you're in the 20% slowest web sites on the internet that will impact your your ranking anything above that you're doing just fine now we actually have a great video we'll link to it here in the in the replay it's one of the best videos we ever made yeah it does not have enough it's crazy that it doesn't have it's about an eight minute I think video that tells you exactly what to do and it only took you about 30 minutes to actually do all the steps yeah tells you exactly what to do to speed up your WordPress website to be in a probably about the top 20% of websites on the internet yes so yeah this it's all free there's nothing in it that's easy anything just on YouTube type type in how to speed up a WordPress website and just look for the video from income school it's definitely worth your time your guitar guide says can you talk about SSL Certificates is it a ranking factor there it is yes so Google has in the past said that this is a tie breaker like of all the 200 ranking factors if you're still the same sure we'll throw it in there today that's different now that we get the chrome insecure warning on a browser and things like that it's starting to impact user experience and so we consider this a pass/fail now every site needs to have SSL it's easy to do and it's free yeah it's not necessarily that having it's going to necessarily make you rank a lot higher but if people click on your on your website and then chrome tells them this is a non secure site do you want to proceed danger you know like do you need an SSL to get an SSL just contact your host there's no reason you should really have to pay for one let's encrypt does free SSL and pretty much all the reputable hosts out there are offering this as as a free thing yeah SSL for those who are asking SSL is a it's a security certificate basically what it does is it encrypts your website so when somebody is viewing your website that their user data the what they're doing on your website their traffic all that stuff is not visible to other people whereas before I mean before people could could access that information and it used to be super super important for for websites that do financial transactions nowadays everybody should happended yeah it's the HTTPS versus the HTTP yeah absolutely this is another reason why we recommend Bluehost for starting any new website if you go to income school comm slash new we'll walk you through how to get started there and you know there are tons of them we've been trying different hosts and their different hosts for different purposes but the thing that we love about it and why we always recommend it for beginners is they have the best cPanel in the industry like once you're signed up to get on SSL to get WordPress installed that is crazy easy and so it just passes a lot of this pass/fail stuff automatically for you there are other great hosts I don't really care who you choose that's one that I'm just saying it will knock off a lot of things for you and you say WP engine is better that is true they're also substantially more active and their cPanel is there's also too expensive which is why we just dumped oh yeah we did next one lack of malware the way to avoid getting malware on your web if you malware on your website Google will see that and it's bad yeah easy navigation on your site you are a length mobile-friendliness excessive broken links over monetization copyright issues and plagiarism if you're writing about like recipes or news you need to use schema.org otherwise it's not such a big deal these are all pass/fail we have a checklist for you of things you can go through to just knock them off and make sure you've done that go to income school calm slash 2019 notes and you'll get the checklist just you just check your website make sure you're doing okay here yep all right let's move on this is cool this is this is really fun so this is a patent from Google this is a few years old but it did not get enough play time so what the patent does is it basically establishes different timings for how your page is ranked so when I write something within a few hours at least three hours we found out this week Google is gonna go through and it's gonna look at it just with do its machine testing on this what key what words are you using what query does this belong and all that kind of stuff and it's going to give you an initial ranking that may last for a little while and then you started to hit another step it's I'm referring to this as stepped rankings you get your initial one then you know maybe fifteen I see a big one in thirteen weeks just kind of rule you gotta hit a new level after it's done maybe some initial user testing to see if people like of this content etc and then it takes longer about thirty five weeks before you get to pretty close to where your final highest ranking is gonna be yeah it's what's cool though is that like while this was something that we thought was the case we there's actually a patent for this like yeah Google is actually doing this and and they do this specifically so that it's harder for people to game SEO it's hard to tell exactly what is working and what is it because it doesn't have immediate results so you are not the father says do you perform website audits yes and no if you go to income school comm and click on private coaching that's where you would find this it's very expensive though it kind of only works for some people because it's our direct time if you want to do a website audit like we're showing you how to do this I go get project 24 or do-it-yourself from this information and just learn how to do it yourself if you have an established website where it's making some money like it really would be worth having our eyes on it then that's there but if you don't have it coaching you for most people it's gonna be to expand something to keep in mind when it comes to a website audit you may say well it's a it's a ten or fifteen minute thing but it's not for us no we have to sit down to have to look at your site we go through the analytics all those kinds of things and we spend a significant amount of time preparing for those kind of audits so a 15 minute audit wouldn't make sense because we'd still have to charge you too much for that exactly and that's why it's important to learn the principles no matter what because there are a hundred and one ways to mess up a website and we've done some reviews on this YouTube channel where people did a lot of things right and then for their site title and description it was like whatever Divi this is the Divi theme yeah you know with their site title for the whole website and that's gonna hammer em in the rankings because Google thinks their website is about the Divi theme not about whatever topic they're writing about there are a hundred ways to mess it up that's why we're giving you this checklist and going through these things it's because it's just too easy to mess up if you aren't careful and somebody asked they said that they're hearing that Google's killing SEO and 2019 that's exactly what we're actually kind of talking about here traditional SEO a little SEO the old tactics that people use to try to trick the system yes those are dying but it's not that they're dying in 2019 it's that every algorithm is getting Google closer and closer and closer to their ideal and we're teaching you how to be their ideal not how to game yeah look at our video from this week about how to beat Google algorithm updates and that will give you a really important history of what Google has been working on in the past and now it used to be about you know links and spam and all that stuff and now it's a lot more about user experience so these are some action graphs from our Google Analytics on a variety of different websites showing what it's like for a brand new page so I've just taken some fairly random brand new pages on our website and saw how long it takes them to to rank and you'll kind of see those steps you'll see where they kind of hit a one-one ledge and then another one and so it's it will take time for your content to rank in fact it will take about 35 weeks for your article to get to the 90% of the level that it will ever get on so for example it takes on a brand new website 35 weeks if I write a new article it will take that article 35 weeks until it's about to the top of its gonna top ranking that will hopefully last for a long time yeah now somebody asked about Yoast versus all-in-one SEO and I know this is kind of a really specific question but I do want to touch on one thing Yoast SEO and all in one SEO in general do the same thing they're providing certain information automatically to Google to help you determine what you want to appear you know as your excerpt that will show up in the search results as the site title or show up in the search results that kind of stuff and that's great and you we use them for that are they necessary actually no but the one thing about Yoast SEO that we're not liking is that it confuses people big time they give you a readability score they give you an SEO score and both of those are complete garbage and completely ignoring I actually still kind of like to use the Yoast SEO on some of my sites but what I'm telling somebody else to set up SEO on theirs I usually tell them all in one because Yoast confuses the heck out of them they say this article is not going to perform well in SEO I'll tell you what we got a lot of read SEO scores that ranked number one for the keyword that they supposedly have a read SEO score for I agree a thousand percent Yoast SEO is a plug-in there's nothing wrong with it the problem is that they have this old-school view of how SEO works and so they they have this keyword density and stuff that's like ah it's it's right there in the editor in you your your SEO plugin for wordpress is doing very very little little it really the valuable thing that it gives me is a way to change the Meta Description that's probably how I use it yeah everything else stock WordPress is gonna rank great great Ecuador abroad says a thousand percent of his excessive probably a hundred would have done yeah or we want to take some of your questions that we've been getting throughout here so we have about a million that have come on here so Nile MacMurray says if after thirty five weeks your pay your article is on page two should you go make that page better or should you start fresh with something new great question and it's at if it's a difficult one what I usually say is take that page redirect it to a new page and then start fresh maybe you even copy and paste that old article into it but you do a significant rewrite because you know that didn't work now I've heard tons of SEO people and on podcasts and stuff talking right now about just taking your content and re optimizing it and stuff going through your old stuff I did see a traffic hit on improved photography when I did this and I've heard from plenty of other people that are like whoa didn't work for me and so unless you had a lot of like really bad stuff really poor quality content in the past I would default to making a new page redirect the old one that's on the same topic to the new one and starting fresh yep I think that's a great one hippy science garden says are these timelines per article well yes if you have an article a website that only had a one article though and you wait 35 weeks it may still not rank because you have just a very poor reputation because you only have one article in this little site so I mean there's a little bit of the domain Authority going with that but pretty much yes we're talking about per if somebody says I have an eight-month-old site with a hundred articles on it and it's not getting any traffic I say how old are they are all those articles like have you been doing a ton of writing now but you started the site eight months ago no no that's yeah that's per article that's exactly right and we've noticed that that time line it still persists in the future like we when we came up with that 35 week number we looked at articles that were on established websites as well however for really really low competition keywords we have seen well-established web sites ranked number one very quickly much like sometimes three hours but normally it's still going to be that kind of it normally on an established site oh baby we're talking about 13 18 weeks but on a brand-new website more like 35 no you know the question came in should I use paid advertising to get more visitors to a page will that help my SEO you know using paid advertising only makes sense if you can get an ROI on that and a return on that investment and you probably can you probably can't especially if you're just trying to get people to come to your website to build up its reputation that that doesn't work as soon as you stop advertising it goes back down okay if you're going to use paid advertisement it needs to it needs to send people into a like a funnel a sales funnel that's going to lead them to eventually buy a product and then you need to know that the the value that you get out of selling that product ends up paying for all the hundreds of people who saw that ad before that before anybody actually bought the product yeah absolutely we got another question here from force Townsend says he has a 200 plus page views a day from Pinterest and now he's kind of wondering where does it go from here focus on social or focus on more on Google you know I feel like a lot of most every website needs some balance to this Pinterest traffic goes like this it just does it you know it can get a spike from a lot of people happening to share it Pinterest is liking that pin for a little bit and then you some of the mount of it will stay because you know people are still on Pinterest but I feel like you to balance your traffic source as much as possible so I would start writing content for for SEO that's not right writing content for people who are searching on Google and what we recommend for that well we teach in our project 24 course on income school comm is we teach write articles about tiny little topics little competition direct first then move on to bigger topics as your domain Authority increases as your reputation increases okay so just would you suggest for new sites to use Amazon affiliate for monetization yeah absolutely it's still a great monetization method and then others are even asking about ads and stuff and different you know as far as ads let me just kind of give you my rundown on ads we know that it has a negative impact on user experience in general having ads but the value in ads can be substantial when you have a brand new website with very few visitors you're gonna earn nothing you're gonna earn like a few bucks a month maybe when you have almost no traffic it's just not worth it to put google adsense on there or any other type of ad platform at the very beginning in my opinion I feel like until you actually start to earn something from it that makes it worth potentially losing a little bit of traffic now again when we put ads on our web sites we don't tend to see a negative hit in traffic and the reason why is that we try to keep ads to a reasonable level no more than what people would expect to see in a normal blog but Coogler actually has standards on this yeah there's a group that makes you know kind of the standards for good ads on the website on the web and just follow them and if you're with a good ad network then they're gonna help you do this all already your guitar guide it says what's your take on a site map this is okay so if I were training you for the Olympics in hockey which I can't do because I don't really play hockey but if I were training you like at some point before you're like a pro level player I would probably stop and say let's talk about how tight you're tightening your laces on your skates like it's something like okay that could actually help you to prevent injury but if I were teaching your hockey not one of the things I would worry about and that's really what a sitemap really is like it's like if you add it will I suddenly make your site better an SEO know is it something you probably should do if you have an established site and you've done a whole lot of stuff before yeah sure but if you're using a normal WordPress theme just one that isn't messed up you don't even need a sitemap Google is going to find your pages easily no problem if you have just normal a normal way of navigating the site it does not need a sitemap is it a best practice and something you should do eventually sure you know our entire Canadian audience just unsubscribe because you don't yeah I don't care about okay is SSL free and Bluehost yes it is somebody asked what do we think about media buying you know we started using media mind a few months ago we're testing it out overall I'm pretty happy with just my experience with them in general it did take a while to get through the approval process and get and get started but I've been pretty happy with them what we want to test now is how they compare to other ad networks and so we'll do some testing and let you guys know probably yes there are a lot of ad networks out there and and a lot of them do some good things do we recommend a CDN for site speed it really depends on your server setup so I I tested it at one point unimproved photography and I actually saw some worse scores after the CDN that what my host was doing just coming from there was actually just a little bit better the idea of a CDN is great it certainly can make sense in some places but I would ask this question to your host go to your host and say what do you guys recommend because it really does make a difference how they're set up yeah let's see a lot of questions coming in and I know you guys have a lot of questions for us we're mostly going to focus on SEO here today but let's see a couple questions about project 24 sure um one you know I set up my niche sites using free themes do I have to buy something premium no absolutely not and we have a free theme we recommend in project 24 another set if I sign up for project 24 you're gonna force me to do video content we've said it a lot of times video is one of the best opportunities in all of internet marketing right now it is something that we include in the 60 steps but it's a very small portion and we have plenty of project 24 members who feel like you and they're like I don't want to do YouTube and their web sites are still being sick that's just that's right exactly video is a huge opportunity but if it's not something you want to do whatever that's fine whatever skin fine as do we use amp as of now we don't it part of that it's just because it hurts a little ad revenue on that victim and and for now it's not really that important I mean our our sites on mobile are plenty fast they they work well just doing the things that we talk about in our site speed video so no we don't use amp Michelle um Oh II I hope I say that ready is a project 24 member and she's celebrating and her pizza day well congratulations well done that means she's earned her first five dollars from the website and oh we won't delete this video [Laughter] awesome all right there's so much we can go into I want to answer this one thoughts on PB ends don't do it yeah every time if I'm ever looking to buy a website which I'm not right now but if I ever was and I see pbn I immediately I'm out don't look at that one yeah thank you guys for being here we really appreciate the support our YouTube channel is blowing up right now which we're really excited to see we're putting everything into it we can if you care about passive income websites and SEO and all that stuff that's what this whole channel is about so be sure to give us a subscribe and thank you all for being here
What Will and Won’t Work in SEO
Video Transcript ▼
As time goes on, SEO is becoming harder and harder. So should you even do SEO any more? Of course you should. Majority of the people click on organic listings and not paid listings. Hey everyone, I'm Neil Patel and today, I'm gonna share with you, SEO in 2019, what works and what doesn't work. (uplifting music) Now before we get started, I have a simple question for you guys. How many of you guys are SEO experts, or SEO beginners? If you're a expert, leave a comment with expert, if you're a beginner, leave a comment with beginner. The reason I'm asking this is, and the reason I'm curious, because I'm gonna lay down down some new tips, and hopefully you guys don't know about 'em. The first tip I have for you is, blogging drives a ton of traffic. You guys know that, Google loves content, as they say, content is king. But here's the thing, there's over a billion blogs right now. So, if you go out there and you just write tons of blog posts because your competitors rank for all these terms, it won't work. Regurgitating the same information over and over again won't produce results in 2019. What you need to do is create a new unique spin. You have to write about fresh stuff that people haven't seen. So instead of focusing on writing a blog post every day, maybe write a post once a week, or if you can't even do that, once a month, but if you write something that's super new and unique, I kid you not, you're gonna get a ton of social shares, you're gonna get a ton of backlinks, you're gonna get a ton of comments and engagement and traffic. The reason being is, right now, so many people are producing blog posts, majority of that information is regurgitated. People are looking for new information and they're craving it more than ever right now. The second tip I have for you is to build a brand. There's a lot of sites out there creating fake news, and Google hates that. They're looking for brand signals, and if you're wondering how big your brand is, go to Google Trends, type in your brand name, versus your competitor, and you'll see how you're doing. The reason they wanna rate brands is, it builds trust. They know that if people are looking for your brand, they trust you, and you're less likely to create crap content or write fake news. So if you wanna build a brand, you gotta do things that are offline as well. I know that sounds counter-intuitive, but it will help your SEO. You gotta take a omni-channel approach both online and offline, and if you do that for a long period of time, I'm not talking a few months, but I'm talking about a year, two years, your brand will get bigger and bigger and you'll find that it's easier for you to rank on Google. The third tip I have for you is, link building is harder than ever. Everyone's hitting up these sites for links. Yes, there's over a billion blogs, but because there's so many sites out there, everyone's getting hit up more and more for links. So instead of just going out there and trying to build links, because in most cases, you send off an email to someone, they're just gonna be like no, I don't wanna link to you. Instead, what I want you to do is use a Link Intersect feature within ahrefs. It shows you who links to your competitors and who doesn't link to you. If someone links to three, four, five of your competitors but not you, you know they're open to linking to other sites in your industry, there's a much higher chance that they'll link to you if you hit them up. The fourth tip is make sure your website loads fast. Google has a mobile-only search engine as well as one just for your desktop and laptop devices. Speed is more important than ever. Yes, I know people have 4G and 5G phones, just because they have fast ones doesn't mean they're in an area with really strong reception, so that could mean your website loads really, really slow. Use Google Page Speed, it'll show you what you need to fix to load faster in Google's eyes. The next tip I have for you is voice search. Voice search is becoming more and more popular. Two out of every five adults are using voice search. If you're using voice search, leave a comment with yes. If you haven't used voice search before, leave a comment with no. I'm just curious, I know they say hey, you know, voice search, I don't think it's sexy, not too many people are talking about it, but by 2020 over 50% of the people will be using voice search. So you wanna make sure with your website and your content, 'cause that's typically what's gonna rank for voice search, you're answering questions people may type in, in short sentences. Not big long paragraphs, but it should be one to two sentences. The shorter you are with your responses to the answer, the more likely you're gonna rank. And of course, we found that HTTP sites, everyone should be on HTTPS by now, but if you aren't, switch to that, it'll help with voice search, as well as having a fast-loading website, that'll also help with voice search. The sixth tip for you is, update your content. Google's tired of ranking old, outdated content. I've mentioned this many times, there's over a billion blogs, so what does that mean? There's content on everything. Whatever you're writing on, the chances are, there's 50 other articles similar to that. If you wanna do better, I know I already mentioned, write new, fresh content. But even with your new, fresh content, other people are gonna copy you, so you need to update it, it doesn't have to be monthly, but at least once a year, go into your best-performing pieces of content and update them. It'll help ensure that you continue to rank high on Google. So that's it, that's how you get more search traffic in 2019. If you want me to help you get traffic in 2019 check out my ad agency Neil Patel Digital, where we help grow companies. And of course, if you enjoyed this video, make sure you like, comment, subscribe, really appreciate that. I look forward to seeing you next time.
9 Actionable Tips for Ranking YouTube Videos
– Today, you're gonna learn how to rank your videos number one in YouTube. In fact, the YouTube SEO tips I'm about to share with you have helped me rank for hundreds of different keywords. And thanks to these nine strategies, I even rank in the top three for the keyword video SEO. Now, I should warn you. I'm not gonna give you generic advice like use video tags. You already know that stuff. Instead, you're gonna see little-known SEO tips that are working right now. I'm Brian Dean, the founder of Backlinko and let's dive right in. When I launched my YouTube channel a few years ago, I felt great. And to get ready, I watched dozens of videos from so-called YouTube SEO experts. So, I was super excited when my channel finally went live. I thought to myself, "Self, it's only a matter of time "before your videos rank in YouTube and get lots of views." There was only one problem, it never happened. In fact, despite working really hard on my videos, my views barely budged. One day I decided to stop following the advice from so-called YouTube experts. So, I slapped on my lab coat and set out to figure this whole YouTube SEO thing out myself. Let's do this. And trust me, I tested everything. I tested different combinations of keywords, video lengths, introductions, tags, and more. It took months of almost non-stop testing for me to figure things out. But in the end, I developed a formula for ranking videos that actually worked. This formula quickly grew my rankings, views, subscribers, and traffic. Now it's time for me to show you the nine most powerful strategies that I used. So, without further ado, let's kick things off with strategy number one, front-load your keyword. Everyone and their mom knows you should use your target keyword in your video title. But what you might not know is that YouTube puts more weight on words that appear in the beginning of your title. For example, let's say you want to rank your video for cold brew coffee. Most people would use a title like this. Now, that title isn't horrible or anything. But you can easily make that title even more SEO friendly by front-loading your keyword. A title with a front-loaded keyword would look something like this. In fact this little tip works so well, that I tend to front-load keywords in almost all of my titles. With that, it's time for our second strategy, boost video engagement signals. Last year, I conducted the largest YouTube ranking factor study ever. Specifically, we analyzed 1.3 million YouTube search results to figure out what makes certain videos rank higher than others. So, what did we find? We found that videos with lots of engagement signals outranked videos that didn't get a lot of engagement. So, what are engagement signals exactly? Engagement signals are things like shares, likes, comments, and subscribes. Basically, whenever someone engages with your video, it tells YouTube people are loving this video. Our data found that comments correlated with rankings more than any other engagement signal. The question is, how can you get more people to comment on your videos? From lots of testing, I've found that putting a hyper-specific call to action at the end of your video, works best. You see, most YouTubers use a generic call to action like, "Leave a comment," or "Let me know what you think." But I've found that hyper-specific call to actions work much better. So, instead of a generic, "Leave a comment," give your viewer something specific to comment on. For example, at the end of this video, I asked my viewers which of the two strategies from the video they're gonna try first. Because I made commenting insanely easy, that video has racked up hundreds of comments. Our third strategy is to use the tab formula for video tags. Here's the deal with video tags on YouTube. According to our ranking factor study, tags aren't as important as they used to be. That said, tags still make a difference. So, it's worthwhile to spend some time in them. Unfortunately, most people on YouTube use tags completely wrong. Remember, your video tags are designed to help YouTube understand the content of your video. Which means you don't need a lot of tags to get the job done. In fact, if you use lots of tags, you're just gonna confuse YouTube and Google and they'll have no idea what your video is actually about. For example, take a look at this video. It has a whopping 17 tags. Imagine for a second that you're YouTube. What do these tags tell you? Well, they tell you that the video is about 17 different topics. If YouTube doesn't understand what your video is about, they're not gonna rank it for anything. That's why I recommend using a small number of highly specific tags. I call my approach the TAB formula. The TAB stands for target, alternative, and broad. Here's exactly how it works. First, make sure that your first tag is your target keyword. Just like with your title, YouTube puts more weight on tags that appear early on, especially your fist tag. So, if your keyword is green smoothie recipes, you'd make your first tag green smoothie recipes, simple. Next, create two to three tags that are alternative versions of your main keyword. For example, you'd use variations of green smoothie recipes like green smoothie recipes for breakfast, and easy green smoothie recipes. You can easily find these variations by popping a target keyword into the YouTube search field and seeing what YouTube suggests. These suggestions make perfect alternative versions of your main keyword to use as tags. Finally, include one or two broad terms as your last set of tags. These tags should describe your videos overall topic or industry. The goal of these broad tags is just to give YouTube more context about your video. For example, broad keywords for green smoothie recipes would be things like nutrition and smoothies. Next up, we have CTR magnet thumbnails. You probably already know that click-through rate is an important YouTube ranking factor. In other words, if your video gets an above-average amount of clicks in the search results, YouTube's gonna give you a rankings bump. The question is, how can you get more clicks. Use CTR magnet thumbnails. So, what are CTR magnet thumbnails? They're thumbnails that are strategically designed to get more clicks from YouTube searchers. Here's the step-by-step process. First, use non-YouTube colors in your thumbnail. What do I mean by non-YouTube colors? Well, the main colors on YouTube's website are white, red, and black. So, if you use those same colors in your thumbnail, you're gonna blend in. Instead, I recommend using colors that contrast with YouTube's color scheme like green, blue, purple, gray, and orange. For example, I use green, blue, and gray in most of my thumbnails. These colors help my results stand out from the others which brings me more clicks. Next, use big, bold text in you thumbnail. My experiments have taught me that thumbnails with text get more clicks than thumbnails without any text. That said, your thumbnail is pretty small. So, you don't have a lot of room to work with. That's why I recommend using 30 characters of text max. For example, the thumbnail of my video that ranks number one for e-commerce SEO, has a grand total of 23 characters. Our fifth YouTube SEO tip is to write many blog posts for your video descriptions. When I first started my YouTube channel, I put zero thought into my video descriptions. This video is awesome. And description done. It turns out, this was a huge mistake. From lots of testing I've found that long descriptions help videos rank better in YouTube because the longer descriptions help YouTube better understand what your video is all about. That's why I recommend making your descriptions between 100 and 200 words. For example, check out this video of mine that's done really well. The description for this video is 142 words. And that long description has helped that video make it's way to the top of YouTube for competitive keywords like SEO. You might be wondering, "What do I actually write "in my description?" Well, you want to outline the content of your video without giving away the farm. For example, here's the description for my e-commerce SEO video. As you can see, I describe the content of the video but I don't get into the meaty details. That way, even if someone reads the description, they still need to watch the video to see the actual content. Let's jump right into our next strategy, boost video length. When it comes to video SEO, what works better? Long videos or short videos? Well, when we analyzed 1.3 million YouTube videos, we discovered that longer videos tended to outrank short videos. In fact, our data showed that the average video on the first page of YouTube is 14 minutes, 50 seconds long. What's going on here? Well, a few years ago, YouTube said, "We focus on those videos that increase the amount of time "that the viewer will spend watching videos on YouTube." In other words, YouTube loves videos that keep people watching for long periods of time. For example, check out this video from my channel, it's almost 14 minutes long. Because that video is on the longer side, it racks up lots of watch time automatically. That simply wouldn't be possible if my video was only two minutes. Bottom line, whenever it makes sense, make your videos between eight and 15 minutes long. In my experience, that's the sweet spot for ranking in YouTube search results. Moving right along to our next strategy, strategy number seven, which is to use brackets and parentheses in your video title. Like I mentioned earlier, YouTube uses click-through rate as a ranking factor. And, yes, your thumbnail is a big part of the equation. But don't forget about your title, it's huge. In fact, YouTube themselves, state that, "Well written titles can be the difference "between someone watching and sharing your video "or scrolling right past it." One of the easiest ways to increase your click-through rate is to add brackets or parentheses to your video title. In fact, a study commissioned by HubSpot discovered that simply adding brackets and parentheses to titles boosts the click-through rate by up to 38%. For example, let's say you just published a video that outlined 10 video marketing tips. And your original title looked like this. Well, according to HubSpot's research, by changing your title to this, you can increase your clicks by more than a third. Actually, parentheses works so well, that I tend to use them in almost all of my vide titles. And here are some examples of things that you can include in brackets or parentheses that work really well. Now it's time for strategy number eight, rank in suggested video. Here's the deal, YouTube SEO is more than just ranking in the search results. In fact, you can get just as many views if not more by getting your video to appear as a suggested video. Suggested video is when your video shows up next to another video in the sidebar. So, if you can get your video to show up next to a really popular video, you'll steal some of their views. The best way to show up as a suggested video, use the same tags that video uses. When YouTube sees that some of your tags match the tags from a popular video, they'll understand that your video is about the same topic. Which means they'll likely rank your video as a suggested video. For example, let's say you wanted to rank as a suggested video next to this video. First, check out the tags that video uses. To see a video's tags, you need to look at the source code of the page. To do this with Google Chrome, just right-click on the page and click view page source. Then look at the keyword section of the page. The keywords that appear here are the tags for that video. You can also use a tool like TubeBuddy or VidIQ which will show you a video's tags without needing to look through the source code. Next, use a few of the tags that video uses on your video. Make sure to copy the tags exactly word for word. If your video is high-quality and closely related to the popular video, YouTube will start to rank you as a suggested video. With that, let's dive into our last strategy, turn donkeys into unicorns. The fact is this, whether you're a small channel or have a million subscribers, we all have videos that do better than others. Why is that? Well, there are a lot of reasons behind this. But from analyzing millions of videos, I've found that videos that do well tend to have one thing in common, lots of watch time. We talked about watch time a little bit before. It's the total amount of time that people spend watching your video. I recently discovered a great way to increase my watch time, turning donkeys into unicorns. Here's how it works. First, log into your YouTube analytics and click on audience retention. This report shows you how much of a video people watch and where they tend to drop off. Then, search for a video you've published on your channel that's done really well. Finally, keep an eye out for audience retention peaks. Peaks are sections of your video that have above average audience retention. Then, just watch that section of your video to figure out what kept people watching that part. Did you put a graphic on screen? Say something funny? Or maybe you did something simple like change the camera angle. Take note of that. Then apply what you learn to future videos. For example, here's an audience retention report from a video I published a while back. See that peak right there? In that section of the video, I outlined a real life example of how someone increased their Google rankings. So, I made sure to use real life examples in the beginning of all of my future videos. It helped those videos go from potential donkeys to amazing unicorns. Okay, so I know I said I'd show you nine video SEO strategies. But I recently came across a cool little hack that's working really well for me. And I wanted to share it with you. That hack is include the current year in your video title. YouTube users want to see content that's current and relevant. I know, thanks, Captain Obvious. But, here's the thing. How do you actually demonstrate that your content is useful today? Include the current year in your video title. When you include the current year in your video title, your result instantly stands out in the search results and in the suggested video sidebar. Which means you'll get more clicks and views. Plus, as a bonus, lots of people search for keyword plus year in Google and YouTube. So, when you add the year to your video title and description, you'll rank higher for these keyword plus year keywords. For example, if your title looked like this, just add the current year and you instantly have a title that's gonna get you a higher click-through rate. So, did you learn something new from today's video? Then make sure to subscribe to my YouTube channel right now. Just click on the subscribe button below this video. I'm not confusing myself now I can see what's going on with you guys I got my kind of monitor down here you guys are right here and this is where the information is gonna go down so yesterday I mentioned in my email and in some of the posts that put up about this there is a prerequisite for this course and that prerequisite is the keyword research video that I did if you search my channel for keyword research it's about an hour long video that I taught my exact method for keyword research what we're doing today is we're taking the steps beyond keyword research we're taking what information did we get back from that keyword research tool and the goal from here is do we actually what do we do with these keywords right so what I'm gonna do here real quick is I want to do I'm gonna write a few kind of key words up here because the way you should figure it out is you should always have about two to three key words for every post but they need to be the exact same thing said different ways right so a post or a video should be on one topic and we're gonna use this one so learn SEO had the highest numbers for me when I did keyword research on what am I gonna actually title this video was it's SEO master class SEO webinar learn SEO was the biggest and baddest keyword for my kind of goals here now I was ignoring and am ignoring for this example the competition side of the keyword again I discussed that at depth I just need something to use as my example here for you guys so that was the first one the second one was SEO training and then third one was SEO course now these were essentially one two three right and when I say one two three I'm basing that very specifically off of the search volume so one two three so these are my goals right like if I rank for one either all of these I'm absolutely stoked and that really needs to be your first kind of focus while that focus is going in and out I will fix that over time but we're just getting started here so my goal ultimately is to rank for this but I know that Google also sees this and this as super relevant to the main topic so what I create now and I'm doing that with you guys is I'm creating a piece of content focused on learn SEO SEO training SEO course now I'm obviously making a video to start but this will turn into a blog post I will have my team Josh if you're on good to see it if not I'm sure you'll catch the replay I'm having my team transcribe this through Trent and turn it into written content I'm gonna start with the act WordPress side of things I'm gonna start and lay out how I do this with a blog post and then we'll also do how I lay this data out for a YouTube video so if you're doing a 90 day content challenge if you're just on that marathon runners pace and you're using content marketing this is like your best practices for SEO so let's jump right in and let's kind of get started here so what I'm going to do is I'm gonna draw this out in a way that I want you to visualize what's going on so here we're gonna start with the format of a WordPress page visually so that's your WordPress page now I think it's really important if you're on WordPress for everybody to be using the Yoast plug-in it's a free plugin I don't use their paid updates Yoast is what allows you to control the main kind of what's called metadata it's the data behind the data what we're gonna do is this is the page this is everything you can see on your page the metadata is the stuff that's off page and the metadata is similar for YouTube and for your blog so the first thing you need to do is come up with a title right so a title goes in when you actually kind of write up your blog post the first thing you have to do is title your page that title needs to have your main keyword as close to the very front as humanly possible if you can get your secondary or third tertiary keywords in and in that title as well in a way that reads really well to humans you're gonna be kind of above kind of steps above on the game right there so what I did is learn SEO free SEO training course and then the date and the date I put in because it's really specific to YouTube because I'm people who see that to know that it's live right now I'm I'm pushing the live thing so for the title here it could be learn SEO the best free SEO training keeps you from buying an overpriced SEO course that could be my title Yoast is going to show you how many characters you have you want to make sure you're within their character limit but you want to make sure you're using as many characters as you can you don't want to be titling your posts learn SEO and that's it because you're wasting a lot of this kind of real estate here now the title is probably one of the most important indicators to Google and YouTube on what your content is about and the same rule applies for your YouTube video so I'll even draw will do YouTube here right so I'll draw a YouTube this is gonna be our YouTube so we got title goes there there's our video there's stuff and we'll put those as tags so the title is the absolute kind of biggest way for you to say hey this is exactly what my content is about so for the title for this learn SEO the best SEO training that negates the need for an SEO course or learn SEO the best SEO training course for free online for 2018 now you notice when I did that last one I blended SEO training and course together I don't need to have exact match keyword phrases everywhere in fact that's rarely readable and that rarely makes sense to people what really makes sense is to make sure your number one goal is to make it readable and understandable to humans your number 2 goal is to make sure these keyword phrases are in there as often as possible so title and title I'm gonna leave that off will draw more on this here in a second so the first thing is a title number two and this is blog only your description number three URL okay the number two is your description now this is something you set inside of the Yoast plugin that's below at the bottom of your wordpress post editor there's an area it'll automatically pull some content from your posts that you put in you always want to rewrite over that now I kind of skipped a little bit here but it comes into play here as well in writing your titles and your descriptions you want to use a little bit of copywriting persuasion because you want to compel visitors on Google who are searching for your keyword phrase you want them to compel you want to compel them to choose you right so you need to use good headlines headlines that get people to take action that's why in the learn SEO the best FREE SEO training that negates an SEO course like you're talking to their mindset of I don't want to buy anything I just want the best free training I possibly can they see yours they read that in your description after searching for SEO training they're like wow this person gets me the copywriting side of that works so they click and they go on because both YouTube and Google are monitoring your click-through rates and when you have higher click-through rates than the people above you often that's enough to get you to go above up up and kind of jump over them in the search engine results so in your title and description and your URL we want two goals number one is the keywords but number two is to have it be compelling now you have I believe a hundred and sixty characters for the description and again you want to get that keyword main keyword towards the beginning of your description when possible and make sure that is compelling content that's gonna get them to actually click I spent a lot of time on this personally I spend a fair amount of time thinking about this because if you write titles that are SEO optimizing keyword optimized but they don't compel people to click you'll never get the rankings because if everyone around you is getting more clicks than you Google and YouTube will eventually kind of put you lower and lower and lower and lower in the rankings because other people are getting more clicks they see the click-through rate from the search engine results page as a positive engagement so you need to show them that so studying books Victor Schwab's got a book called how to write a good advertisement you can get it on Kindle for like nine bucks or five bucks I was written in the 1940s and he covers like a hundred of the most famous or most the best headlines of the 1940s but he doesn't just use them he talks about why they're compelling and that's that's that's the big part that's difficult to teach is it's the why behind the words it's the mindset that the users in when you you link this there searching for learn SEO because they have a business problem they realize that they're not getting any traffic and the SEO is the barrier for them to get more traffic so when you enter that conversation they're having in their head with your title and your description the likelihood of them jumping into your content versus your competitors content goes up significantly and that's that's really the trick to the beginning the URL you can just get your keyword in it right so for this I would totally just go with like forward slash learn – SEO so it's human readable it's really neat and tidy it would be miles vector column for size you learn – SEO I've got my click funnels – alternative is that one obviously optimize for that phrase how to advertise on Facebook just how – to – advertise on Facebook to get this working you need to go into your permalinks setting and I set the permalinks setting to automatically pull my keyword or excuse me my title and it'll put the full title in but then down in the Yoast settings you're able to override what it default pulls and I just make sure I've got that dialed in before I jump on now this is meta data which means it's data behind the data we haven't even gotten on the page yet we're just filling out the basics this is at the very top of your editor on WordPress these two are down below the actual content area in the Yoast box that's below the content editor so I often end up doing these last I'll kind of start with the title I'll go into my content and then I do these last but I figured we talked about that metadata and then really quickly if you're doing YouTube the first two lines here or actually your description right so this is on YouTube you don't have a description metadata field but YouTube pulls two-and-a-half to three lines the first two-and-a-half to three lines of your YouTube description is what YouTube pulls out and puts in the search engine results it's weighted more heavily than the rest of the description content so title and the first two lines are effectively your description and here it's a separate actual tag all run through Yoast it's free it's super simple to use so what you're gonna see next is depending on what theme you're on one of two things will happen it will either take your title as is and add it to the top or it won't now there are a series of tags in HTML called heading tags and it is h1 tags so they look like this and you don't need to do anything with tags I'm just showing you because I like to teach you what's going on behind the scenes in WordPress there's a drop-down at the top that says heading and these go h1 or heading 1 through about heading 6 I believe is the the lowest that they go I generally use H ones through about H fours I haven't I just don't don't go below and I'll tell you exactly how to use these so the first thing we're trying to figure out is does your theme automatically take your title and put it at the very top of your published page as your h1 tag or as your heading 1 if it does you don't want to re add an h1 or a heading 1 tag if it does not you do want to add a heading 1 or h1 tag so what this means is that when you're actually typing your content in you may not see any text here on the editor but when you load your page it automatically pulls this title and puts it big and bold and you can view the source of your page and you're looking to see if it's an h1 tags tiny bit of techy the reason we need to kind of understand what our theme does by default is you want one and only one h1 tag on your page all of the h2s and h3 and h4 s all the way down to h6 you can have as many of them on your page as you want this is a hierarchy in Google's eyes of you're saying this this sentence this title is the number one most important set of words about this overall post or topic that I'm creating so you need it to be focused on one one post is about one topic it's about one grouping of ideas so for me I'm gonna get as many of these in there as I can in fact I would allow my title to show up right at the top you just need to know so if your theme does not automatically create an h1 tag or a heading one the first thing you do when you load your editor is you go put in a title you highlight it you drop down and select heading 1 and it will automatically put it nice and big up top so you have an h1 this is great then we get into body copy if your theme automatically does this for you you don't have to put it in there make sense you just don't want to really big duplicated titles on your page and you don't want 0 big titles at the top of your page so work with what you have figure out how it works make sure you have one title at the very top of your page then we're ready to get into the content I'm gonna draw a bunch of squiggly is that are gonna represent some different things that we'll talk about here in the future so give me one quick sec now we make sense shortly here alright so what we just did here is I've laid out the page all right that's the goal here is to give you the the basic overview of what this is going to look like once it's all laid out these are characters are paragraph text paragraph text this is an image this is a Pinterest image 700 pixels wide by 1100 pixels tall that I make smaller inside of the WordPress kind of editor and the reason is because this Pinterest if you go through our Pinterest training you can have this become a backlink for you you can put a plug-in called the pin it plug-in on your site and then when you because you want to pin it right away when you go pin your image to a Pinterest board it's actually gonna automatically kind of put that out onto Google it's gonna ping the search engines and it will help you get indexed quickly from there so then we have the image this squiggly is my h2 notice it's a bigger more advanced and bolder squiggly an h2 can also mean heading 2 it's the same thing if you're manipulating the HTML yourself you use the h2 tag if you're using just what WordPress has by default you simply highlight that line and then you click over to heading 2 I'll explain more about this I'm just giving you the overview right now we'll go back through all of these pieces then there's more text that supports this idea and this is my heading 3 okay this is we'll explain it more again but I'm just showing you there's a hierarchy right so this is the initial idea about the overall piece this is heading 2 heading 3 then we might have a video then we're gonna have an image here I'm gonna do one more little squiggly at the bottom we get down low here we need to switch it up and use some color here I don't do color very well but wife you help me pick out this color which I absolutely love so color is good I just don't use it enough alright so what do we just do here right so what I'm trying to give you is kind of like an imagery based framework that you can work with that's gonna make it easy we're trying to structure our content in a way that shows Google what the most relevant ideas are throughout our content and then we structure it to where the second most relevant ideas the third most relevant ideas all are in there in a way that's organized in a way that Google's spiders are able to read our content and we're able to really kind of give them all of that structure to say this is my number one most important item this is my number two most important item my number three most important item you probably will have a dozen or more additional keywords that say the same thing like this like SEO tricks SEO tactics that you don't limit yourself to three I just did that for the purposes you want at least three kind of core I'd core ways of saying the main idea but you could have five six seven of them and you can sprinkle them in throughout your content in a way that's very readable and it lets Google know that you have all this supporting content that supports this idea to prove that you have just created the best post on this topic and these topics ever made and when you number one actually create that good of a post and number two organize it in a way that Google is able to interpret it through their search engine spiders which we'll talk about in a second then that's how you get good rankings and if you're starting out in here at zero and you're just starting just do this over and over and over and over and over again but like one of the things that how how long is it going to take you to do a hundred posts like this well optimized super focused on keywords that are really truly dominating posts if it takes you a year you can do one in every three days great put in two years work shovel the pile for a year right you're gonna see the results if you can do it in a hundred days that's absolutely epic great do that right like the goal is just how quick can I get myself to so much content that Google can no longer ignore how awesome my blog is and how awesome my content is this plug-in running on WordPress alone right like literally the WordPress framework and this plug-in with these basic ideas tied in that's enough that will show Google Google will find it their search engine spiders will spider your content so let's go into that what's a search engine spider this is a bot that Google has made that crawls every page of your website that it can find every single time so every time it reintroduces itself because it goes back to your site every day every time it revisits your site it starts at the home page it starts at the top left and it reads absolutely everything it follows every link that you have and it then goes and reads all of those pages then it follows every link on that page and it goes and follows what it finds on those page and these spiders crawl through all of your content this is why I'm miles better calm I have my blog roll on my home page so just below my image and my heading my mine it's kind of got my image my little uh for second elevator pitch and hello that's my blog role so when I put up a new piece of content it's right there one of the first things that the search engine spiders picks up on everyday then it goes and reads my content and these tags these heading things and all these different things that we're talking about will go deeper on it's reading these saying like okay so miles use this as as heading obviously this phrase is the most relevant phrase to this post okay miles put an h2 down here obviously this is the second most relevant topic to this entire post then supporting this idea would be right here so like h3 like h3 is a sub idea of h2 so in this like best SEO training for 2018 so we go from SEO training here to best SEO training for 2018 here I'm using the same phrase but I'm also assuming that there is search volume for best SEO training 2018 there's not I would find something that had that exact phrase in it but longer tale had three or four words on that and then you get that into your h3 does that make sense I think this is making sense I'm gonna glance over and see like how y'all feeling with this is it are you guys okay cool so we've got a bunch of questions which is fine we'll get into that Southern Mississippi awesome cool cool I'm just checking the comments want to make sure kind of this this makes a little bit of sense so David Patrick green some guys that a lot of the SEO keyword tools do not work and their results are invalid just use the one I teach man like I said go go use my keyword research that thing works like a champion can I turn the board I can't this is bolted to my wall you can't see the board on the left side alright cool so let me go here real quick interesting so this would be the left side correct is that you guys can't see that let me I'm gonna go move my camera real quick give me a quick second all right now I got microphone issues all right if I sit down here cool we got miles in the corner hey its miles in the corner right so I want to give you a better view of this and I'm gonna move the camera one more quick time I think that's better so here's the challenge my microphones gonna be in the way but I think if I crank up the gain right here and leave it down some turning up how much that picks up all right how's that can y'all see me can you all hear me how's that working let's see what that does I think you can see it better so give me comments if that helped in any way now that fettle is cool now move mic yep got that cool so Mike can you hear me as well still your voice hears well the mic is good oh cool all right sweet so we'll run with this for the next being thanks for your patience like new studio I'm learning how to do this I may end up moving the mic to the right side over here sounds awesome pretty basic yeah Phil this is designed to be basic like like fundamentals right like don't look at championship football teams are they doing fancy no they tackle they run they pass that's it they catch that's it like there is no fancy stuff and this is one of the the things that people look at is like oh what backlinks do you use in blah blah blah I don't and I generate tens of millions of visits a month and I give zero F about backlinks so like my goal is I'm that basketball coach right now that's gonna make you dribble in place and run liners all effing long because that is what wins the games is running your liners and rebounding and passing right like that's the only kind of drills I'm ever gonna teach you as the coach because that's what works here and everybody else is teaching you like all this like ninja stuff and oh here's the newest backlink trick and blah blah blah but like it's all fake they're just trying to sell you I don't have anything to sell you I just want you to be able to do this effectively so when you do my 90 day content challenge you end up with great results and this is what gets you great results doing this a hundred times over and over and over so that's that's really where I'm at and like it's so simple I know it's gonna be a guru who's yeah you have and obviously you need to hear it again because doing this over and over like my wife and I day in and day out this is what we do and what's cool about it is once you flex the muscle enough you don't really think it's like I like these SEO optimized titles in a heartbeat and really it just we go quick through it right so I'm gonna go back to my other screen it looks like you guys got to view I got a little bit room here there's my edge cool all right so we're in so I just did the the hierarchy of the the heading tags again in WordPress all you need to do is highlight the line of text you want and then you simply go there's a drop-down up top and you set the heading 2 heading 3 s support heading twos so in this post I would have SEO training in heading 2 and it would be a mini headline right like what all other SEO trainings forget to mention you know that could be my h2 something that the humans gonna redo this is gonna be juicy down here and it compels them to keep reading but it also gets my second keyword in there so down here my next h2 is going to be number 3 and you could have like 5 10 h2s and it'll visually break up your content in a way that makes it really easy to digest so you never have a huge block of text it's kind of like here's the main idea here's a couple paragraphs about that here's the next main idea here's a couple paragraphs about that here's the the deeper main idea based on this main idea here's a couple paragraphs on that once you realize how this works you can kind of almost outline this stuff right so your outline would effectively be your h1 is your main topic you would do all your h2s so you maybe have like three subtopics and then underneath each of those subtopics you got like one or two subtopics those become your h3 is then when you go to write your blog post all you're doing is you put out your title and you're like cool I'm going to write to 200 words on that check put on my h2 that I already figured out cool I just need to write 200 words on that check my h3 comes in 150 200 words on that check and by the time you get through that structure you've created a really good kind of organized coherent optimized post I'm seeing a little red on my audio input is my mic peaking I get like excited when I talk to y'all I don't want to like peek is that mic peaking or can you hear me pretty good we've got that yep I do appreciate your your time difference between posts and pages there really is none pages are static content posts are chronological so for me I've got like my about page my recommend resources page and then for my blog post is everything I'm putting up so all my videos go on all my videos go on the new pages cool it is peeking a little bit one sec just turn that down I get so excited talking Elmo like yeah so posts and pages for our purposes here you follow the same layout and it really doesn't matter there's some organizational stuff that might make sense in the future we could talk about a little bit but that's not one of the it's just not a big deal right it's just not one of those things like if you if you do this on a post versus this on a page neither one is gonna be optimized greater than the others so a little mug of my throat code tiro here like the gigantic mug my wife cobot me I like big mugs and I cannot lie cool so we've got the structure right and at this point my goal has been to help you understand how to organize the words that you're putting on the page here so that your structure proves to Google's spiders and shows them the organization and relevance of the keywords that you found again the prerequisite to this was keyword research I have a video on that probably should a link to it oh it's probably the description I think I did link to it in the description here so you should find that so then we've got our titles we've got a main copy at this point you've got all your coffee structured and already mentioned we got the pin here what I didn't mention on this is two things you want to do on your pin since Pinterest has like a reddish color I'll use red so number one is your file name number two is your alt text okay there's three things I remembered one has I got to number two so the Pinterest image you make save the file name as your main keyword right so this Pinterest image I would make as learn SEO – pin if I wanted or just learn SEO so I would make this the learn SEO dot jpg file name when I upload this inside of my wordpress dashboard in the actual kind of media manager you have an alt text area and a title area I believe it automatically pulls the title from your file name but the alt text is automatically off and you want to make sure the alt text has your main keyword in it also what you're doing is you're optimizing this image to prove that it belongs here with your title right if this is just you XB y jp2 dot jpg there's no relevance of that filename towards learn SEO so these are ways to sneak in a bit of relevance towards our main keyword phrase this is another image down here I would use probably whatever the main keyword is above this I would use that as my alt text as my image file name etc etc so this one being under this h2 before that h2 would be SEO training and this this image down here would have a title SEO training alt text SEO training my file name would be SEO – training dot jpg so that's a way to optimize your images and Google likes multimedia posts right humans like multimedia look at magazine for example right we flip through magazines like how many people read all of the words in magazine not many how many people flip through magazines looking at all the pictures in the magazine everybody right that's what we do so remember that in your layout that you want to kind of play on these things that mainstream media has got us to look at right like play on what what we already do and what works now that's a little bit more structure getting the images in I want to talk a little more about keywords and then I want to talk about links inside and so my green pen is going to be bold and it's gonna be just keywords it's I'm going to show you when it's bolded and when it's italicized as well so inside of the title we want our keyword to be in that first paragraph as well and and I'm totally jumping around a little bit and that's exactly how I did this for the abundant circle and that's just kind of how I roll so thanks for your patience to kind of work with me on this and understand this at some point this will be transcribed and organized into a killer blog post so if you need to wait for that but I'm I'm just trying to really get you all of the ideas that you need to be able to move forward effectively so we want to get our keyword in our content right we you know if we're truly making a course about learn SEO we're definitely going to be using the phrase learn SEO and SEO and teaching us and all these sub phrases of SEO so this green this keyword doesn't have to be exact match phrases right I could say learning SEO is not that difficult once you get these five things right or like how do like when I learned SEO right using I wouldn't actually use that because because you want to write in a you voice not a high voice but some like I think you get what I'm saying if you want to find more of these phrases that are like sub phrases to your main keyword go to Google and on Google type in learn SEO up at the top like actually on Google not just your browser bar go to google calm winds on that type in learn SEO space and stop you're gonna see an auto populate come up these are the main things that Google already thinks people look for when they search learn SEO look at what those main five or four or six things that Google says those are some of your sub keywords then actually search learn SEO on Google look through the page at what's bolded right Google will build the keyword and any additional keywords it thinks means the same exact thing schooled the very bottom of that Google search engine results page and you'll see a list of related search phrases and I think they do upwards of eight to ten and it's like sometimes like two rows of five and they're blue links down there those are the other things that Google says that you want so I pull these from my keyword tool because I want to I want to get data on my search volume and I want to get data I want to focus my content topic on something that's going to be relatively easy for me to kind of rank for which is my difficulty score and number two I want to make sure there's actually search volume for it once I know what these are I like Google tell me what all my sub longer tail phrases are by simply treating them on Google and looking at what automatically comes out from Google so you sprinkle in the key words throughout when I say key words again we're talking about sub we're talking about these sub keywords too right so it's not always the same it's not learn SEO learn SEO learn SEO learn SEO it's variations of that because if you're really teaching people how to learn SEO there's SEO trainings SEO course there's all kinds of other phrases that are naturally being used I mean this this video is a great example I'm saying Lauren I'm saying all kinds of things about SEO in many different ways yes I'm repeating this phrase but I'm saying dozens and hundreds of other phrases also so you need to get that end you can bold these things to show extra and like extra importance that's pretty ugly but that's a bolded keyword right there so you can bold your keywords to show additional you can also use the italics tag I don't use those much sometimes it works really well if you have a long text area and you're like man it's just like it's just long text it doesn't look great throw a couple of bolded lines in there that are separated from each other and it'll chunk it up and it'll break it up for the eye and if you do so on the lines that have your keyword it will also show additional relevance to that keyword in the search engine spiders and obviously to the human also so if someone's like scanning it they'll jump from title to the bold line to the sub to the bold line to the sub to the video to the image and they can get a good picture of what that whole post is by skimming it so you're making it skin friendly and you're adding additional relevance for the Google and the search engine spiders who are kind of searching for your stuff video let's talk about the video down here real quick so also red because YouTube is red so alphabet is the parent company of Google and YouTube both their algorithm works very very similarly if you have your own video that you've made on this topic already definitely embed your video if you don't be comfortable and confident embedding someone else's video that's hyper relevant because your goal here is to show Google that you've really done the research to create the most optimized post on the Internet about this topic right like if I was literally going after learn SEO which this video will end up I'm thinking 6,000 words is what I'm gonna end up with here maybe 4500 maybe 7500 I'd put money on it that'll be give or take 500 words around the 6000 word mark so epically long content is gonna need images of bolds and headlines and videos in throughout if you don't have a video that really is kind of like learn SEO that's super good what I would do is I would go to YouTube and I would type in my main keyword phrase learn SEO enter and I would see what is the number one video that Google well alphabet or YouTube thinks is the most relevant video then I would watch the video I would click play does it have an advertisement I don't like playing advertisements for people on my thing I don't know if they play ads when you embed now that I think about it because I'm always embedding my own videos right so this isn't I don't go there but like if you're doing a 90 day challenge with written content embed other people's videos I wouldn't want to put any that have really big kind of like advertisements up front I wouldn't necessarily want to put in a video that's got like pop-ups and calls to action everywhere and I definitely wouldn't put in a rubbish video I would put in a video that actually is really good so on a learn SEO kind of side of things I would probably do like a model webmasters video I would look for search engine land video like who are those people on a level in the industry the SEO book right Erin Rand Fishkin or whatever his name is like I would look for videos from those people who have built massive massive audiences in this space over the course of the last 20 years or 15 years or whatever it is I would embed their video in there again making sure that it's reinforcing it here but if you can put your own video in that's obviously better right because then you're getting your own video embedded it helps this it also helps this so you could put multiple on one page my how to advertise on Facebook post has 28 videos embedded on it and in between each video I wrote about 250 to 400 words so how I made that post was I had all these videos and they were all kind of scattered around on YouTube I went and started by just collecting all the YouTube videos I had from my channel put the title in the URL and then I organized them and then I was like cool so I took all of that just super simple notepad and then I wrote a couple of hundred words about each video and and kind of linking the user from one video to the next like walking them through okay first you need to do this now that you got your pixel in place now you need to do your custom conversions blah blah blah blah and then that mean okay now that your customer and so I write as if I was talking to them to get them through put that all together it turned out to be just it's like three thousand thirty four hundred words and 28 videos I'm not ranking for how to advertise on Facebook but I am ranking for a bunch of other phrases around that phrase and that's what will happen here for me right I probably won't start ranking for learn SEO but there's like hundreds if not thousands of sub phrases that are about these three and I will absolutely start to rank for dozens if not hundreds of them and it'll trickle in traffic left and right here to there it also gives me a really cool resource that I get to email my list about then I'll go into this video and I'll link my video over to it getting a little above and beyond right there so at this point we have our fully optimized post right we've got our titles our subtitles and our sub subtitles organized effectively with our keywords I didn't write that the keywords were in there but I want to make sure it's clear so the keywords are in these each you got keywords behind here okay keyword behind here that's an image if you couldn't tell we now have a hyper optimized post now the one additional thing that you'll want to do especially when you start to grow your content is internal linking so for me my learn SEO I've said at least four times in its video keyword research is like a core part of it and in fact in this learn SEO for me I would at least have an h2 section or maybe an h3 section about keyword research but I wouldn't try to explain everything about keyword research because that is not exactly on topic for this post it's a supporting topic for this post have defense it being in h3 but what I would do is I would link to my own keyword research post for people who need more information on keyword research and obviously it's blue and it's underlined so that's a hyperlink so I would hyperlink the actual text I would say click here for my complete guide to keyword research and I would make that whole sentence click here for like all of that I would make all of that my clickable link because it has my anchor right it has the word keyword research being linked which is my main keyword for that post which I want but it also has more than that so I'm not risking over optimizing because if you go into something like this and you put keyword cuber cuber cuber cuber cue it like and literally you're you just keywords stuff your post you could get an over optimization penalty which would have negative effects for you and and Google be like okay like you're not being serious you're just saying the keyword over and over and over again this is obviously not useful for your audience therefore we're not gonna give you the rankings we're gonna give to the next guy he's got a little less text we don't think it's a it's just it's just better content so that's what you're kind of protecting about against so then this post links to my keyword research I would go to my keyword research post and I would say that you know in the top maybe it might be and remember keyword research is just one component of great SEO if you want to learn SEO check out my free SEO training post here so that from this page would link back to this page and I would go into every page I have so what I do when I create a new really really powerful blog post and I haven't had time to do this for than furnishing this place and all kinds of crazy stuff but like all go into like my instagram marketing post for example and I'll go to my own blog I'll take my URL from instagram marketing post and i'll just kind of put it on notepad then i go to the search button on my blog or to Google and I search my site for social media marketing Pinterest marketing all those other phrases organic marketing right organic traffic and I would find what posts do I already have written that have already been picked up by Google to get re indexed every day what posts do I have that have relevance to my Instagram marketing and I would then link all of those additional blog posts back to this so let me draw that for you okay that's pretty chickens scratch down here so this is my keyword research post this is my organic traffic post and I would just make sure that once this is done that I'm going in and I'm linking them back to this post and I'm creating a web of internal links so there's been some questions about backlinks and I'm sure we'll have more questions on backlinks I will also if I have a video that's optimized for this I'll link my video and any video I have so I could go back to my keyword research video and say hey remember keyword research is just one part of overall search engine optimization you'll want to link back here oh that's funny so speaking of search engine optimization obviously like learn search engine optimization is going to be one of these phrases up here like it just clicked so so learn SEO learn search engine optimization how to do search engine optimization how to do SEO like there's I think it's clear now even though I have three here my actual list of phrases that I've got in a notepad file that I'm sprinkling throughout here is probably gonna be 12 to 20 phrases that all kinda say this same thing but they say it in different words and that's how I by targeting one and focusing and having twelve or so different phrases about that that's how I might not rank here but I might rank for 25 to 50 other ones and on those 25 to 50 that's actually where I get my traffic I do this long enough my whole blog increases in authority when I got a hundred killer posts like this my whole blog increases in authority and at that point I may start to creep up and rank for these ones but I'm not I don't care if I don't hit the first page of Google for this with this post that got us into our internal linking inside of assets that we own Pinterest you know you go repin your own Pinterest if you followed my Pinterest strategy you have rich pins turned on you have a business account so when you pin this if Pinterest pulls this information into the pin and then it actually links that pin in Pinterest back to you so you get a backlink there other places I do sometimes go create backlinks is my Twitter I do post a lot him on Twitter Quorra Cora is kind of a question and answer site that I've built up a fair little profile on I was mainly doing Cora for my videos and people were like how do I learn SEO and you're like well it's a big loaded topic but I created a blog post it'll teach you how to learn SEO in one blog post for free it's too much to write here in a flora answer so check it out here and I put the link in and I link back from there Yahoo Answers is is really similar in that sense but like beyond the super basics of Pinterest my own videos and Twitter and Cora I really don't do any backlinking and we never have and a lot of people swear by it even Bryan Dean who runs backlinko he thinks outreach is the name of the game and my wife and I have proven that when your content is good enough this is what Matt Cutts said Matt Cutts is the old-school web spam guy from Google who when Google rant rolled out penguin and panda and hummingbird updates that crushed people's businesses he was kind of a guy who was communicating that to the world man there was a lot of hatred for that guy on the SEO forums this is back 2012-2013 so Matt Cutts said very clearly back in the day that the Google algorithm does not want us to build links that building links and buying links and paying for guest posts etc is very risky and they began D indexing people who were kind of masked link creation and he clearly stated that the right way to gain links is to write content that is so good that people simply link back to it there are some like styles of content you can create that have a higher likelihood of getting you backlinks like if I get a roundup post and like let's say I did a post that was like top 10 search engine optimization specialists for 2018 and I go in and I look and I'm like hey Bryan Dean you know I just go through all these different people who are Tommy Griffin Rand Fishkin and I essentially write who they are a link to their and what they do and then I could go reach out to all of them to like hey you made it on my top 24 20:18 list yay with the hope that somehow they link back to me but that would end up with a lot of outbound post and that would end up with me promoting other people and that's not what my blogs about right so my personal philosophy is I want to stand as the person who's teaching so I'm I'm just gonna make like my how to advertise on Facebook post is like it took me months to create that because all those videos rig
